Hemelse woorden

We verstaan elkaar weer.

Voetnoten

[1]     As we began to pray, the Holy Spirit moved among us, as was normal at our prayer meetings. Most were praying in tongues when this Jewish man fell to his knees and called out to Jesus to forgive him. We were quite shocked as we did not know what had happened to him. After he recovered from his experienced, he told us that he heard someone praying and worshiping in fluent Hebrew. The words spoken praised the Lord and talked of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Many other students came to the Lord as a result of this one event.  Nonetheless, if there is a message in tongues and there is no one to interpret, the world will not come to an end and neither does the Kingdom of God hang in the balance. The meeting simply proceeds and the one who spoke the message in tongues will need to be more careful to be sure God is moving through him or her before speaking. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[2]     When we pray in tongues, we bypass the human will and human desires. Thus we bypass the very human resistance that normally accompanies the thought of doing something we don’t want to do. You see the Holy Spirit searches out the needs of the heart and prays for us in tongues. He does not ask our permission. We have already given Him permission when we gave our tongue to Him. Now He is free to work in us, through us, and among us. We have given the Lord free reign. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[3]     Surrender to the Lord is always the key to progress in our lives. As long as we are surrendered to Him, we experience growth, peace, and a sense of real spiritual adventure. The baptism of the Holy Spirit and praying in tongues is the next step of your personal development and eternal purpose for living. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[4]     Your prayer language is an integral part of this relationship with your Lord. Your prayer language is worship. It is a language that speaks heavenly sweet nothings to your Lord and Father. It worships and extols the Lord, lifting your heart to Him and your spirit to the heights of all God has for you. Your prayer language understands how you feel about the Lord and worships Him with words that best describe how you feel. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[5]     In his foreword to The Young Church in Action, his translation of the book of Acts, J. B. Phillips says, ‘‘We cannot help looking wistfully at the sheer spiritual power of the minute young Church, which was expressed not only by healing the body, but ‘by many signs and wonders’ which amply demonstrated the fact that these men were in close touch with God.’’ This is why we need to gain more understanding of this phenomenon of speaking in tongues. We must try to learn God’s purpose in setting this gift in His Church. It is not a turning to something bizarre, out of boredom with the present-day Church; nor a seeking after experience for experience’ sake. Rather, it is a key which God has brought back to His Church—perhaps a very small key, but nevertheless a key—for recapturing the power of the young Church. (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[6]     When you pray in tongues, it will remind you of your heavenly Father’s love and all He has planned for you. It always gives me great peace and reassurance when I pray in tongues. Praying in tongues will undoubtedly do the same for you. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.) One pastor who came into this experience characterized it in this way: ‘‘It seems as though every gift and every blessing which I have already experienced in the Lord is refreshed and revitalized.’ (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[7]     Speaking in tongues carries many benefits for our spiritual lives. The more I speak in tongues, the more I flow as one with the Holy Spirit. When I am exhausted and weary, praying in tongues brings refreshing to my spirit and soul. It is like being in a flowing river on a hot day. Apostle Paul applied Isaiah 28:11-12 to the experience of speaking in tongues in First Corinthians 14:21. Isaiah prophesied, “‘This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest,’ and, ‘This is the refreshing.’” Speaking in tongues causes the river of God to flow through us, bringing refreshing and rest in the Lord (see John 7:37-39). (Hamon, B., 2012. Seventy reasons for speaking in tongues: your own built in spiritual dynamo, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[8]     We are accustomed to thinking of edification in purely intellectual terms. But Paul says specifically that when you pray in tongues your mind is ‘‘unfruitful.’’ When you exercise this gift in your private devotions, some other part of you, besides the intellect, is being built up. (In the private use of the gift, interpretation is not necessary, 1 Cor. 14:28.) The edification spoken of in this verse has the total person in view. It might be well to say a word about some of the testimonies people give after experiencing this gift: Oh! Suddenly I was just overflowing with love and peace and joy—all the fruits of the Spirit blossomed in an hour. . . .The Word of God almost jumped off the page at me, with new meaning and power. . . .I can witness with such ease. . . .Even family and business affairs have undergone near-miraculous changes! (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[9]     The gift of one’s spirit prayer language comes with the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The gift of the Holy Spirit is for every Christian to receive and practice, just as every Christian is to receive water baptism. The Holy Spirit’s gift of speaking in tongues is part of the practices and doctrines of the New Testament Church. Therefore, it is essential that we be thoroughly established in the biblical truth of the gift of the Holy Spirit, its purpose, and all of the valuable benefits of praying in our spirit language. (Hamon, B., 2012. Seventy reasons for speaking in tongues: your own built in spiritual dynamo, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[10]   ‘Do you have to speak in tongues when you receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit?’’ Speaking from Scripture, one would have to answer, ‘‘No, there is nothing in Scripture that says you have to speak in tongues.’’ But this is a little like a child who would ask, ‘‘Do we have to have presents in order to celebrate my birthday?’’ We could certainly answer that child, ‘‘No, you don’t have to have presents on your birthday.’’ But it is hard to imagine many children taking delight in that answer—or asking the question in the first place.  Why not look at the question of speaking in tongues from a positive viewpoint, with childlike expectancy? ‘‘You mean that if I receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit, I can also have the gift of speaking in tongues?’’ (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[11]    This is a gift that every believer can use with benefit. If a member of the church is sick, it is not necessary that every member have the gift of healing; one member with the gift would be sufficient. Every member, however, needs to maintain a private devotional life, and therefore every member can benefit from this wonderful gift. The main blessing of the gift of tongues is in one’s private devotions. The Lord, speaking by the apostle Paul, says, ‘‘I want you all to speak in tongues’’ (1 Cor. 14:5, emphasis added). Ask yourself, ‘‘Why do I want this blessing?’’ It is a part of what you may receive through receiving the baptism with the Holy Spirit, and Christ tells us what that is for in Acts 1:8: ‘‘You shall be my witnesses.’’ If you yearn to be a better witness for Christ, for Him to have a deeper grip on your life, this blessing is for you. Put it to the Lord in prayer. Tell Him the desire of your heart and ask Him to guide you. You may feel led to wait a time, or you may feel ready at once to seek the blessing. (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[12]    On a recent trip to Italy, I closed the Sunday morning meeting with an invitation to pray for folks, as I usually do. On this particular morning, I was surprised when a teenage girl dressed in Goth came forward for prayer. She waited patiently as I prayed for others ahead of her. I looked at her again and again, trying to get a sense of her deepest need. I was not sure if she had come by choice or by decree, but she was there nonetheless. Her lips, tongue, nose, ears, and eyebrows were pierced, and she wore typical Goth jewelry in every piercing. She showed no emotion as she waited for me. When I finally approached her, she simply closed her eyes without a gesture of any kind. I took her hands into mine and began waiting for the Lord to tell me something, but I did not have an idea about how to proceed. I finally decided to simply pray for her in tongues knowing that whatever the need, the Holy Spirit would find it out and pray for her through me.
I could sense the Holy Spirit probing her spirit when suddenly she began to weep. I continued praying, realizing that the Lord had landed on an important issue in her life. Unfortunately for me, I had no idea what it was. Several minutes passed and the urge to pray only grew stronger. I had learned long ago not to rush to the work of the Spirit. If it took longer than expected, then the others would just have to wait. I cannot stop until I feel in my heart that the prayer is over. By now the girl’s parents were with her, also praying quietly. I could see the hope and the urgency in their eyes. Their love for her was strong. I knew this day would be a turning point in her life. As my prayer in tongues for her grew in intensity, her tears grew more uncontrollable. I knew God was doing something for her, moving a mountain that only she knew existed. After 20 minutes or so, the prayer subsided. I had a release from the Lord, but I did not know what, if anything, had happened. The only thing I knew for certain was that the prayer was intense and landed on a place in her that was most desperate. As she continued to sob, her parents took her back to her seat. I could see the disappointment in their eyes. All I could do was trust the Lord that His will was done.

Some may ask why I did not pray for her so she could understand me. Some would wonder why I did not cast out a devil or give her a verse from the Bible. My goal, however, when I pray for someone is to be as true to the moving of the Holy Spirit within as I can possibly be. I don’t want to say something that God is not saying. I don’t want to make something up to make anyone feel better. The worst thing you can do for someone is misrepresent the Lord. It is bad for them and for the work of the Lord in their lives. It is also bad for me. If I minister in a way that is not consistent with what God is saying, how will He trust me in the future to reach one of His own?

The meeting ended, and the afternoon was full of conversation about the morning service and this young teen in particular. The conclusion was as it always is: Trust the Holy Spirit and His work in the hearts of His people. That evening the service was in the same church as the morning service. People gathered and all was as it should be. I again closed the meeting with a call to prayer. I began praying for a young teen. She had a beautiful smile and a look of utter contentment. Suddenly Pastor Pietro interrupted me with a shocked look on his face. “Pastor Don, do you recognize this girl?” I looked at her closely, but was certain I had never seen her. “No, I never saw her before in my life.” When Pastor Pietro translated my response to the church, everyone laughed and began to praise the Lord. The young girl looked at me and said, “God moved a mountain for me this morning when you prayed for me.” I was shocked with disbelief! How could this be that Goth girl I had prayed for in the morning? She was completely changed. The facial jewelry was gone, her color was changed, and her clothes were completely different. Her parents wept with joy, and we all paused to thank God for His miracle-working power. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[13]    Speaking in tongues is certainly not necessary for salvation, but it is a wonderful asset for prayer and for helping us grow in effective ministry and in the grace and knowledge of the Lord. I believe, therefore, that it is available for every born-again follower of Christ who desires it and seeks it humbly and in faith. (Chavda, M., 2011. Hidden power of speaking in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[14]    It is not likely, however, that you will receive this blessing unless you do desire it. Some people say, ‘‘If God wants me to have the gift of speaking in tongues, He will give it to me.’’ This reflects a certain piety on the surface, but this is not the way God deals with us. God does not force His gifts upon us. He makes them available, then encourages us to ‘‘ask . . . seek . . . knock.’’ In 1 Corinthians 14:1, we are specifically commanded to ‘‘earnestly desire the spiritual gifts,’’ for unless there is the hunger of desire, there is no real receptivity. Those who have a deep hunger for God and are prepared to seek earnestly the fulfillment of that hunger, without any qualifications except those imposed by Scripture itself, receive this blessing the most readily. [15]    God wants to communicate with us and through us. There is much He has to say and much He wants us to do. It is an exciting possibility to colabor with the God of eternity. The Lord has provided, through the blood of Jesus, many ways to pray and fellowship directly with Him. Certainly, one of the most profoundly unique ways is speaking in tongues. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[16]    When I do not know how to pray about a certain situation—which is often—I will simply pray for that issue in my prayer language. (See Romans 8:26.) Sometimes the Lord will give me some clarification, but often He will not. Nonetheless, I am comforted greatly with the knowledge that He knows the answer and that my prayer in tongues is the precise prayer that needs to be prayed. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[17]    Speaking in tongues is essentially an act of faith. An act of faith involves two things: the act of the believer and the response of God. An act of faith always involves a venture, a ‘‘risk.’’ Arnold Bittlinger makes the following appropriate observation: ‘‘In Joshua 3:8–9, 13 we read how the Lord tells Joshua, ‘You shall command the priests who bear the ark of the covenant, ‘‘When you come to the brink of the waters of the Jordan, you shall stand still in the Jordan.’’ And Joshua said to the people of Israel, ‘‘When the soles of the feet of the priests who bear the ark of the Lord, the Lord of all the earth, shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan shall be stopped from flowing, and the waters coming down from above shall stand in one heap.’’‘‘The priests actually had to dip their feet in the brink of the water,’’ Bittlinger points out. ‘‘That was their act of faith. It involved a risk: The risk of getting all wet and looking foolish before the people, should God fail to keep His side of the bargain! But when they took this step of faith, God stopped up the waters (Joshua 3:16). (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[18]    Every time you pray in tongues, you are reminding yourself that your life is not your own, that you have submitted it to the Holy Spirit. Your prayer tongue bypasses your brain and the resistance of your will because you do not want your doubt or fear to interfere with God’s work within your life. Every time you pray in tongues, you are renewing your commitment to allow God’s will to overrule your will. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[19]    However, you are not being controlled by human nature; you are being controlled by the Spirit—if God’s Spirit lives in you… (Romans 8:9). (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[20]    We are trained to reject anything that cannot be touched by at least one of our natural senses, these spiritual senses are either ignored or outright rejected. This is where science makes its fatal error. Science demands that everything must be verifiable by at least one of the five senses. Therefore, all dimensions of existence must submit to the dimension in which we live in order to be accepted. Of course, it is this typical human arrogance that demands all life submit to humanity’s rules of engagement, no matter how archaic and closed-minded those rules may be. Religion, in general, has done the same thing over the years. Even as the human spirit has craved fulfillment, the self-appointed powers of religion and science determine what is real and what is not real. Every dimension has its reality. The adventurer within will explore and discover the wonders of these realities.

Martin Luther once said, “Faith takes you where reason alone cannot take you.” When we see into other dimensions, we understand so much more; for we are multidimensional people, designed to live and function inter-dimensionally. (Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[21]   What blessing can it be to pray when you have no idea what you are praying about? Actually, this is one of its greatest blessings—the fact that it is not subject to the limitations of your human intellect. The human mind, wonderful as it is from the hand of the Creator, has limited knowledge, limited linguistic ability, limited understanding, and furthermore is inhibited with all manner of prejudice, little and large. Speaking in tongues is a God-appointed manner of praying that can bypass the limitations of the intellect. (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[22]   This writer had the opportunity to visit with Professor Eugene Rapp, world-famous linguist at the University of Mainz, Germany. He spoke some forty-five languages and was a specialist in West African dialects. He gave me a practical demonstration of coming into contact with a completely unfamiliar language. He read some lines out of one of his recent works: The Gospel of John in the language of a small West African tribe. To my unschooled ear it sounded like little more than a series of animal grunts. I have never heard any speaking in tongues that sounded so primitive. If I had heard sounds like that in a prayer meeting, I might have been tempted to dismiss it as gibberish. Yet this was a known language of the earth. (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

The first test usually comes almost at once: It is the temptation to think, ‘‘I am just making this up.’’ This is a natural thought, for the interaction between the believer and the Holy Spirit is so subtle that it is hard to draw a clear line between my speaking and His prompting. The temptation, when this thought comes, is to draw back and deny the gift, or to quit using it. Our ultimate confidence cannot be the experience itself, but God’s Word. He has spoken in the Scripture concerning this gift, and I have come to Him, my heavenly Father, to receive it. He has promised not to give me a stone when I ask for bread (Matt. 7:9). (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[23]    Speaking is the unique ability of man that the animal world does not have. Animals can communicate with sounds, but they do not speak in a word language. Man has the ability to learn with his mind and speak with his mouth many different languages. Those who have been born of the Spirit and baptized with the Spirit receive a spirit language. This gives the believer a private communication line direct to God’s throne which cannot be understood or hindered by the devil or natural man. It is like having one’s own private telephone to Heaven. (Hamon, B., 2012. Seventy reasons for speaking in tongues: your own built in spiritual dynamo, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[24]    I went back to my room and lay on my bed, praying and singing in tongues. The strength of His Presence was something I had not experienced before that night. The more I prayed in tongues, the more comfortable I was with it. I discovered I could pray in tongues in my mind without uttering a word with my mouth. I discovered that the more I prayed, the more I wanted to pray. My prayer language grew stronger and stronger. It wasn’t long before I felt completely comfortable with this experience and I loved praying in tongues.( Nori, D., Sr, 2009. You can pray in tongues, Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image.)

[25]    The second test usually comes after one has exercised the gift for a time—perhaps a few weeks or months. The initial joy and enthusiasm that one had in the use of the gift begins to fade. You can still speak in tongues as fluently as ever, but it doesn’t seem to be ‘‘doing’’ anything for you. It’s just a hollow shell, with no inner content. The temptation is to let the gift fall into disuse. This is a temptation one must resolutely resist. Every gift of God involves a stewardship of that gift. One who receives the gift of tongues must from the beginning take this stance: God has given me a gift that I shall use to worship Him all the rest of my life. (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)

[26]   One man expressed it this way: ‘‘Speaking in tongues was a spiritual breakthrough for me.’’ There is an awareness of having entered a vast new spiritual realm. And this leads to deeper study of the Scriptures, for one wants to know more about this realm that has suddenly taken on new reality. One suddenly finds himself able to understand the Bible far better. One young worker who received this experience said, ‘‘For years I have tried to force myself to read the Bible, but I never got anything out of it—I couldn’t seem to understand it. Now I read the Bible every day, and I always get some new thought or insight.’’ (Christenson, L., 2005. Answering your questions about speaking in tongues, Grand Rapids, MI: Bethany House.)
